In 2022, Hamburg’s startup scene was forever changed by the arrival of AiDiA, a groundbreaking pitch competition specifically designed for Afro-German entrepreneurs.
Now, in 2023, the event’s second edition, AiDiA 2.0, has once again highlighted the exceptional contributions of the African diaspora in shaping innovation and entrepreneurship.
The theme for AiDiA 2023 was “Forward ever. Backward never,” a quote attributed to Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president.
This slogan perfectly encapsulated the spirit of an event that celebrates innovation, spotlights Black excellence, and pushes boundaries.
With the event sold out a week before its date, AiDiA was destined to make headlines once again.
Welcome Speech by Aminata Touré
Aminata Touré, Social Minister of Schleswig-Holstein and the first Afro-German to hold such a position, graced the event as the opening speaker.
She emphasized the importance of countering racial stereotypes with positive role models, and AiDiA provided the perfect platform for showcasing successful Black entrepreneurs.
The Idea Pitch
AiDiA consists of two categories: the Idea Pitch and the Founder Pitch. In the Idea Pitch, budding startups present their early-stage projects.
Kynd Hair, second place of the idea pitch, aims to revolutionize the haircare industry with plant-based alternatives to synthetic hair, even though questions arose about the proposed price point of the hair extentions.
Enertable, third place of the idea pitch, is tackling the energy and water supply challenges faced by millions in Africa.
Their innovative solution involves repurposing shipping containers, although it’s still in the prototype phase.
The first-place award of 2,000 euros went to Fades & Braids, a Hamburg-based startup that combines local pride with technological innovation.
Their platform utilizes artificial intelligence to provide realistic depictions of various hair types and will feature a marketplace for hair salons specializing in Black haircare.
The Founders Pitch
The Founder Pitch featured startups with established businesses.
IVY POW offers sustainable haircare products in powder form, promoting eco-friendly packaging practices. They won 3rd place in the founders pitch competition.
RasaTabula, which will soon launch a crowdfunding campaign, addresses plastic pollution with a plastic-free alternative for footballs.
Cloudoplex from the Netherlands helps companies source raw materials with social and environmental considerations through its Nimbus software.
One of the most engaging pitches of the evening came from Akwasi Badu-Aning and Sedi Oben-Torks, who presented the Sankofa Language School.
This institution offers courses in various African languages while promoting cultural understanding.
Their pitch resonated with the audience, earning them second place and 15,000 euros from the jury.
The grand prize of 30,000 euros and a host of valuable prizes went to Dr. George Jojo Boateng and Victor Kumbol, representing Kwame AI.
Their EsqAI platform employs artificial intelligence to expedite and simplify legal research, especially in dealing with complex legal texts.
With successful beta tests and numerous awards already under their belt, Kwame AI added another honor to its collection at AiDiA.
More highlights from AiDiA
But AiDiA is more than just pitches. The previous year’s winners, Isopterra and Oheema Green Housing, reported progress on their construction projects in Africa.
Keynote speaker Jakob Berndt, a co-founder of Tomorrow, discussed sustainable entrepreneurship.
This keynote left many participants in awe.
#WeNeedZebras
Sedric Perry provided musical entertainment, and Captain Khalid brought laughter to the event.
The significance of the African diaspora in this context is immeasurable.
It embodies a diverse range of cultures, life experiences, and talents.
AiDiA, in this regard, stands as a valuable platform for channeling and embracing this wealth of diversity within the world of entrepreneurship.
A look into the future
